Specialists in Group Stays
The main strength of Gunjur Project is its superior ability to organize and facilitate groups of people. We have 12 years hands-on experience of providing exciting programmes for groups of young people and adults from the UK, Holland, Germany & The Gambia. Within the team we have over 50 years experience of managing youth service provision, working with disadvantaged young people, providing high-quality services to vulnerable adults, managing staff teams, care planning, multidisciplinary working and facilitating music workshops as well as having a wealth of knowledge of life in The Gambia.
The management team are qualified youth and community workers. For more information about group and volunteer visits to The Gambia check out our sister site www.govolunteergambia.org
For school & youth groups we have intensive risk assessments that comply with British Standards BS4488. We work with the team leader well before the group arrive providing leaders handbooks and project planning support and guidance.
We have representatives in the UK & Holland who are able to meet with your group and provide information about group visits to The Gambia. Visiting young people are able to experience firsthand what it is like to live in a developing community and understand a different culture. This helps them to grow and mature on a personal level, preparing them for the rapidly evolving and increasingly global society we live in.
The life-changing opportunity we are offering will widen their understanding, working alongside Gambian students they can enjoy a cultural exchange and peer working that is beneficial to all, giving a better understanding and enabling their intercultural learning. Spending time at Gunjur Project will build their confidence, challenge their stereotypes and help them to develop skills that will have a positive effect on their personal and social development - thus encouraging them to take their places as responsible global citizens of the 21st century.
Through the project planning and preparation, we identify community projects for the young people to get involved with.
'Your preparation, organization, and attention to detail were second to none. I particularly liked the way you checked, and double checked, to make sure that we were happy with the suggestions you made. Equally, your flexibility whilst we were with you was appreciated. Nothing was too much trouble; I appreciated the fact that on many occasions you were prepared to go the “extra mile” Mr. Nick McGee, Assistant Head Teacher: Wade Deacon High School, Widnes, UK.
We provide opportunities for young people with learning disabilities and physical disabilities. We believe that gaining a cultural experience is a fundamental right of all young people. Without access to culture and participation in cultural experiences, young people do not have the same possibilities to develop the social and cultural connections that are important to maintaining a satisfactory coexistence in conditions of equality. We identify projects that will meet the needs of the visiting group.
For several years we have hosted a school from the Netherlands. De Hoge Brug School is a public school for Special and Secondary Special Education for children with severe learning difficulties.
The school is part of the Public Education Rotterdam, Each year new students and new projects flourish. From extra classrooms in a nursery school to a new visitors centre built at a protected wetland area – everything is achievable. The school’s motto is ‘Werken om te werken’ (working to work) and when the school visits us here at Gunjur Project their motto is achieved by the positive workings between Hoge Brug school & Gunjur Project.
‘It is a shame you didn`t see the proud faces of the parents of the students at Schiphol airport. There are proud of there children. Grateful for the chance you give them to help the Gambian children and Thankful for the good care you give them’

Drumming & Dance group programmes
The Gambia is home to the most famous West African drum the djembe and here at Gunjur Project, we offer djembe lessons from some of the best djembe players in The Gambia. These teachers lead their own cultural troupes entertaining with drum and dance and so are well equipped to share their skills with visitors to Gunjur Project. We are also able to offer cultural dance, doun doun, latin & percussion workshops. We can offer beginners, intermediate and advanced workshops and can provide professional djembes for sale.
The Gambia offers a most beautiful climate and at Gunjur Project lessons will be held in the vibrant gardens surrounded by flora and fauna in abundance. We have access to a bantabar on an unspoiled stretch of beach - imagine drumming whilst watching the sun dip into the Atlantic ocean!
We also offer your group the option of getting involved with community or educational projects and or more practical workshops like learning how to cook a Gambian dish.
We have hosted Multipercussion group from Holland for the past 4 years providing drum & dance lessons, excursions, and community projects
‘In the first week of May, we stayed with a large group of djembe players in this lodge. Everything was organized so well. We had professional teachers, The rooms were clean en the food was delicious. Every day we had nice trips. The owners and the staff of the lodge were very friendly. They helped us with everything. So we decided to come back again in 2012 with, again, a large group of djembe players.' (and again the group came in 2012 & 2013 & 2014 & 2015 & 2016 & 2017 and we have booked for 2018!! Make a Difference groups
We have recently developed this category of group event in response to numerous requests from our visitors. This is aimed at groups of adults who want to get involved in community activities for all or part of their holiday. As with the youth groups, we can offer many opportunities to work in/with the local community be it advising, training or working alongside.
For example: one group came with head teachers wanting to work with local teachers and develop links for their schools; a group of nurses who were happy to work alongside local health volunteers; others want to be involved in more practical projects like working alongside environmental volunteers or painting a school or helping to fix school furniture.
Here is a picture of a group from Warrington UK. They worked with a family to do a 'compound make-over' They fixed doors, put in fly screen doors & windows, fixed the roof, equipped each room with mosquito nets and painted the house. Everyone worked and helped each other - a fantastic week and a very positive outcome.
'Just returned from 2 weeks volunteering- an absolute gem of a place in the heart of a wonderful village. Made to feel welcome immediately by the incredible family and the staff at the project, whose knowledge of the community and contacts within it, meant that we were able to be in direct touch with it and dive headfirst into some great projects! And projects that we already have plans to continue with... so thank you so much! If you want to take the road less traveled and get stuck into something truly worthwhile, then you don't want to miss out on this place...'

Bird watching groups
Here at the Gunjur Project we are on the doorstep to Bolong Fenyo – a wetland & forestry area which is protected by Gunjur Environmental & Protection And Development Group (GEPADG)
GEPADG have rangers and highly skilled bird watchers who can take you into the protected area and to the best place to see the most unusual birds.
We can offer half day and full day excursions away from Gunjur at Tangi nature reserve, Abuko nature reserve, Darsalami woods, Siffoe, Kartong birding observatory, Berending and many more places. We can provide early breakfasts and packed lunches in cool boxes when required.
‘Gunjur Project & Belong Fenyo is a bird watching paradise for both expert and occasional bird watchers’ Brendan Ringstead – keen bird watcher
The Gambia offers numerous photographic opportunities and no one who travels here should be without a camera. The Gambia has some of the most spectacular and photogenic scenery and also gives wildlife photographers some of the best environments and conditions to work in.
At Gunjur Project you stay in the heart of the community and on the doorstep to a protected wetland and forestry area. Endless beaches provide fantastic opportunities for that perfect shot. We can develop a week or 2-week programme traveling around The Gambia and inviting you to photograph the true beauty of The Gambia in all its glory.
'This week has been one the most amazing times in my life. I have memories I will never forget. Everyone has been so friendly and I have felt so welcome. I feel honored to have been given this experience thank you’
